Who we are
Nightcap is an independent Android app developed and operated by Shreyansh Gaurav, a sole developer ("we"). We are the party responsible for this policy. You can reach us at any time at Shreyanshgaurav9372@gmail.com.
Data collected by Nightcap
None. Specifically:
- Nightcap does not integrate any analytics SDK, crash reporter, advertising network, or tracking library.
- Nightcap does not collect identifiers such as your name, email address, phone number, IMEI, advertising ID, IP address, or location.
- Nightcap does not create or require any account, login, or sign-up.
- We do not operate any server that receives data from the app. There is no backend.
Network use
Nightcap declares the INTERNET permission for one purpose only: Google Play Billing, which is required to process the optional Pro in-app purchase. Network access is never used for anything else. There is no telemetry, no remote configuration, no auto-updates, no "phone home" pings, and no content downloads.
When you tap to purchase Pro, the Google Play Billing library running inside the app communicates with Google's servers to authorise and record the purchase. Those servers are operated by Google and are governed by Google's Privacy Policy. We do not receive or store any information from that exchange other than the local entitlement flag indicating that Pro is unlocked on this device.
Purchases (Pro upgrade)
Pro is a one-time in-app purchase processed entirely by Google Play. When the purchase succeeds, the Google Play Billing library returns a purchase token to the app, which is stored locally on your device (in the same sandboxed SharedPreferences the rest of the app uses) so Pro features remain unlocked across launches.
Google Play retains the record of your purchase (payment method, billing address if applicable, purchase history) as part of providing the Play Store service to you. That data is governed by Google's policies, not ours. We never see your payment details.
For refunds, billing disputes, or to view your purchase history, use the standard Google Play Store interface (Play Store app, then Subscriptions and family, then Purchases).
Data stored locally on your device
Nightcap stores the following on your device only (in Android's per-app SharedPreferences, which is sandboxed to Nightcap):
- Your saved cutoffs (time, weekdays, optional date, countdown length, your per-cutoff toggles for notification visibility, cancel button, and uninterruptible mode).
- A bounded history log (most recent 200 events: when each cutoff was triggered, cancelled, shut down, aborted, or failed).
- Two simple settings flags: whether the master kill-switch is on, and whether you've manually disconnected Shizuku from inside Nightcap.
This data never leaves your device. It is removed when you uninstall the app or clear its data via the system Settings app.
Permissions and what they are used for
INTERNET: used exclusively by the Google Play Billing library for the optional Pro in-app purchase. No other code in the app makes network calls.FOREGROUND_SERVICE/FOREGROUND_SERVICE_SPECIAL_USE: runs the live countdown notification with the Cancel button immediately before a cutoff.SCHEDULE_EXACT_ALARM/USE_EXACT_ALARM: schedules the cutoff alarm so it fires at the precise time you set, even when the phone is in Doze.RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED: re-arms your cutoffs after the phone is powered back on.POST_NOTIFICATIONS: shows the 10-minute heads-up and the live countdown notification.WAKE_LOCK: keeps the CPU awake for the short countdown so it can finish.VIBRATE: the brief vibration that accompanies the countdown notification.REQUEST_IGNORE_BATTERY_OPTIMIZATIONS: used only to open the system prompt that lets you whitelist Nightcap from battery optimization, so the OS doesn't kill it before the cutoff fires. Nightcap does not silently exempt itself.
Third-party integrations
Shizuku. Nightcap requires Shizuku (or a fork such as thedjchi/Shizuku) to perform the actual shutdown. Shizuku is a separate application installed by you and is governed by its own privacy policy. Nightcap communicates with Shizuku only on the local device, via its Android binder API. No network is involved.
Google Play Billing. Used to process the optional Pro in-app purchase, as described above. Provided by Google Play services on your device. Governed by Google's Privacy Policy.
Nightcap does not bundle any third-party analytics, advertising, or crash-reporting SDKs.
Children
Nightcap is not directed at children and collects no personal data from anyone, of any age. Because no personal data is collected, the app does not knowingly process any child's data, whatever the age of digital consent in your country (for example under 13 in the US, or under 18 in India).
Your rights
Privacy laws such as the EU and UK GDPR, India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, and the California Consumer Privacy Act give you rights over your personal data, including access, correction, and deletion. Because Nightcap collects and stores no personal data about you and runs no server, we hold nothing to access, correct, export, or delete. Your cutoffs and history live only on your device and are erased when you uninstall the app or clear its data from the system Settings app.
Your Google Play purchase record is held by Google; manage or delete it through your Google account. For any privacy question, request, or complaint (including a grievance under India's DPDP Act), email us at Shreyanshgaurav9372@gmail.com and we will respond within a reasonable time.
This website
This site is hosted on Netlify. It sets no cookies and runs no analytics. Netlify keeps standard server access logs (including visitor IP addresses) to deliver and protect the site. The site also loads its fonts from Google Fonts (fonts.googleapis.com) and from rsms.me, so your browser shares its IP address with those providers when a page loads; their handling is governed by their own privacy policies. The Nightcap app itself makes none of these requests.
Changes to this policy
If we ever change Nightcap to collect or transmit any data, this document will be updated and the change will be called out in the app's release notes before the behavior ships.
